Most are preparing their resume, learn how to fill out an application, making connections and get your references in order. But one thing that many students forget to do is to make their social media profiles “job search ready.”
Social media, including sites like Twitter and Facebook, can help you find a job and connect with people who can help you find a job that you really love. However, it works both ways. It’s likely that you have a ton of information out there that can tell employers a lot about you online including tweets, instant message, blogs, and the content and photos you post on social networking sites like Facebook. But have you ever thought about how social media can help – or hurt – your job search? Social media, when it presents the wrong image of you, can backfire and actually jeopardize the possibility of you getting a job offer.
Here are some ways you can get your social media presence job search ready:
- Post a great profile photo
- Change Your Facebook Privacy Settings
- Remove tags on others’ questionable pictures of you
- Delete any negative rants and raves
- Use the ‘mother’ test
- Watch your spelling
- Make certain items public
