The British government has bowed to pressure from business by pledging to freeze the cap on the number of skilled workers allowed into the UK for two years.
The annual limit on skilled workers from outside the European Economic Area will remain at 20,700 until April 2014, the Home Office said on Wednesday.
Independent advisers had warned the government that further barriers on immigrants coming to work in Britain could look very bad for “UK plc”.
Damian Green, immigration minister, said: “The government has been clear that the UK is open for business and our limit has been designed with the industry’s needs in mind.
“The limit, which is undersubscribed, has not stopped a single skilled worker from coming to the UK. We believe there is no incompatibility between economic growth and controlling migration – our reformed, more selective immigration system can achieve both.”…
