Canadian women with MBAs earn less than their male counterparts in their first year on the job, a study shows.
As their careers progress, women MBAs are also less likely to be given the kind of high –profile assignments that lead to the corner office, the study by Catalyst Canada also found.
But the report also found MBA graduates of both genders were less likely than global peers to get international experience and more likely to eventually opt for a public sector job, the study said.
These trends have profound implications for Canadian employers in terms of recruiting and retaining top talent, the report by the non-profit research organization concluded.
“It’s a competitiveness issue for Canada,” Alex Johnston, executive director of Catalyst Canada, said in an interview.
“If you’re a young women looking at corporations and trying to see yourself reflected in a career you’re excited about, you need to see role models,” Johnston said. “If you’re not advancing your female talent that has repercussions through the ranks.”
