Pakistan / Promotion of technical education stressed to secure the future of youth

Participants at a dialogue stressed the need for promotion of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) to secure the future of youth and enable Pakistan to take advantage of its growing youth population. This was the crux of a day-long session entitled ‘Dialogue on Skill Development’ political priority for developing the future generation, jointly organized by Skill Development Council (SDC) Peshawar, Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in collaboration with TVET Reform Support Programme, which is co-funded by the European Union, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Federal Republic of Germany held here at a local hotel on Thursday.

Provincial ministers, members of provincial assembly, leaders of various political parties, industrialists and people from different walks of life participated in the dialogue and shared views on the subject. Speaking on the occasion, Provincial Minister for Technical Education and Mineral Development Nawabzada Mahmoodzeb Khan said the jobs in the public sector had already squeezed, as 78 per cent of the provincial budget was being spent on the salaries.

He said it was not possible for the government to provide jobs to each and every person, which means if youth do not have jobs, they might become part of anti-social elements. Realizing the extent of the problem, the minister said the incumbent provincial government was emphasizing on skill development of the youth. He counted a number of steps the government has taken for equipping the youth with employable skills. He asked the parliamentarians to support the cause of promotion of TVET so that youth within their constituencies could be reached out and given the required employable skills. The minister said as a policy focus was usually on promotion of general and higher education, which has limited prospect of employability. He asked the parliamentarians to advocate the cause of creation of new technical institutes and universities…
