Axe to fall on public service Wednesday, say unions
The axe hovering over the head of Canada’s public service is expected to begin falling Wednesday when thousands of public servants will receive notice their positions with the federal government are being eliminated.
Unions representing government employees say the workforce-adjustment notices have begun “pouring in” from departments that will be handing out letters to public servants in the coming days.
Gary Corbett, president of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) which has an agreement requiring the government to give 72-hours notification of job cuts, said the first notices were delivered Friday, just as Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird was delivering a speech that downplayed the impact the cuts would have on the Ottawa area.

Many federal public employees headed into work Monday wondering whether they would leave at the end of the day with their job still intact.
The Conservative government announced its intention in last week’s federal budget to slash 19,200 jobs from the federal public service by 2015, many of them located in the Ottawa area.
Of those positions, 7,200 will achieved through attrition, the budget explained. And many of those whose jobs are eliminated will have the opportunity to shift over to different positions vacated by new retirees.
Still, thousands of jobs are expected to be removed from the payroll as part of the government’s effort to cut $5.2 billion in spending.
Gary Corbett, president of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, said the government is intentionally trying to play down the job cuts which he said will be felt deeply by his 57,000 members.
“Taking more than $5 billion out of Canada’s public service and expecting the public service to do more with less is pretty bad,” Corbett said in a video posted on the union’s website…
