Unions in US – 58% of adults see union membership decline as bad

The share of U.S. workers who belonged to a union in 2022 stood at 10.1%, down from 1983 when 20.1% of American workers were union members.

Majorities of Americans continue to see the long-term decline in the share of workers represented by unions as a bad thing for both the country and working people in the United States, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted from March 27 to April 2.

Roughly six-in-ten U.S. adults say the large reduction over the past several decades in the percentage of workers who are represented by unions has been somewhat or very bad for the country (58%) and for working people (61%). These figures are nearly the same as last year.
