An error has been detected in the processing of the August 8 Labour Force Survey release. This error impacts only the July 2014 estimates. The source of the error has been identified and corrected estimates will be released on Friday, August 15, 2014.
Statistics Canada takes this matter very seriously and is immediately launching a review of the data verification processes in place. This does not affect other statistical programs. A report on the results of the review will be published on the Statistics Canada website as soon as it is available.

What we can learn from Statistics Canada’s flawed jobs report
Without knowing the specifics of what the error was, we know some of the general outlines of what happened. First, the mistake was not due to a lack of resources. While there have been cutbacks at Statistics Canada recently, the agency knows not to cut the ‘Crown jewel’ of its statistical program — the labour force survey, the consumer price index and GDP. It is one thing to make an error in the estimate of livestock; just admitting to a mistake of unknown magnitude with the labour force survey is front page news. Statistics Canada has always understood this priority.

Statistics Canada identifies ‘human error’ in July jobs report
Sylvie Michaud, director of the agency’s general, education, labour and income statistics branch, said Statistics Canada has been able to determine where the error occurred, but is waiting until Friday to release new data to allow time to adjust packaging of the report.
“We’ve been able to localize where it was in the process. This was a human error. There was something that should have been caught, that was not caught,” she said.

Faulty jobs report is yet another blow to Statistics Canada
Aug. 12 is turning out to be a bad day for Statistics Canada. This year, it was the announcement of the faulty labour force survey data; on the same day last year, the agency announced the release of some data from the voluntary National Household Survey was delayed due to errors.
