When looking at the top companies in the world, 75% of the Fortune 500 companies do all of their recruitment online, according to the former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (U.S.).
Speaking at the FT-Telefonica Millenials Summit, Julius Genachowski spoke about the impact of the digital divide and noted that it needed to be addressed to safeguard employment. When discussing the need to improve access to the broadband grid, he focused on the fact that it’s important not only for job creation, but also to enable people to find jobs.
Since more companies are looking online, you won’t find an ad for these companies in a newspaper. So if you don’t have access to the internet, you’re cut off from a significant potential for employment.
With this is the implication that if you’re not able to find these jobs, then you probably don’t have the digital skills required to succeed in the employment process. This is exactly what the FCC is focused on, having pivoted from its previous focus on telephones to addressing the need to universalise the broadband infrastructure.
