If your boss told you that you had an unlimited amount of vacation time, what would you do?
Would you try to finagle every Friday off, or take that monthlong trip to Europe that you’ve dreamed about? Or would you end up taking less time than you do now?
These questions are not theoretical at a West Des Moines company that offers unlimited paid time off for its 52 employees. OutcomesMTM, a fast-growing medication therapy management company with many workers in their 20s and 30s, hopes to attract more employees with the policy.
Unlimited time off policies are rare but growing, studies show. Don’t expect the trend to sweep workplaces, particularly large employers of hourly workers, like manufacturers, retailers or hospitals. But many employers are recognizing that traditional vacation policies no longer make sense in a 24/7, wired work world.
