Australia | Skills Gap | Still Needing US Workers

There is a “healthy” number of apprentices in the construction industry of a “very high quality” in Australia, industry and training groups have assured, despite the fact the government announced plans to meet a skilled workers shortage earlier in the week.

On Monday the Federal Skills Minister Chris Evans announced that the government will link local employers with US skilled workers to address a skills shortage. Under the plan, US workers will have recognition of their qualifications fast-tracked to get their licences to work on arrival.

James Tinslay, the chief executive of the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA), said he supported the government’s plan. He explained the shortfall of skilled workers, such as electricians, was triggered by the mining booms in North Queensland and Western Australia.

“The mining areas need more electricians,” Mr Tinslay said. “Even if the money is really good, many of our electricians have struggled to cope with harsh, isolated environments, and separation from the families,” he said…
