More than 100,000 young adults are not being paid the national minimum wage (NMW), an increase of
52% since 2010.
The figures were highlighted by the Trade Unions Congress from the government’s final evidence submitted to the Low Pay Commission (LPC).
It found that 35,000 more young adults were being paid below the NMW since 2010.
In total 102,000 16- to 20-year-olds were illegally paid less than their applicable minimum wage rate in 2014, up from 67,000 in 2010.
The evidence paper also revealed that the NMW had fallen in real terms by 4.5% since 2007 when deflated by CPI – although in October the NMW rose in real terms for the first time since 2007.
