Children risk being ‘damaged’ if their fathers are unemployed as they lose a role model, a Government report has claimed. 
In a report to health professionals, officials have warned that children lose a role model when their fathers are unemployed, and it affects their happiness and well-being.
The Department of Health report found that children need a stable figure who goes to work and provides for them.
It claimed that unemployment and a dependency on benefits erodes children’s self-esteem – and can affect them years after their fathers’ find jobs.
The report said: ‘there is evidence that unemployment of a parent may cause a child to have lower levels of well-being in the longer term’, The Times reported.

‘If a child’s father is unemployed , even if the father is re-employed, in future years, this may adversely affect a child’s happiness and self-esteem.’
A record number of cash-strapped older women have been forced back into work by the rising cost of living, a study has found.

What about mothers? they can be role models too. I’d like to know what this research is based on as it sounds like gross generalisations rather than research…
