California / Gender gap persists in most occupations

California men and women continue to largely segregate into different professions, the latest census figures show.

Of the 100 most common occupations in California, only 20 have roughly an equal number of male and female workers, according to the data, which come via the state Department of Finance.

Jobs typically done by men often pay more than jobs typically done by women. For instance, plumbers, the most male-dominated profession in California, earn about $56,000 a year. Preschool teachers, the most female-dominated profession in California, earn about $31,000 annually.
