Although Saskatchewan is well on its way into another year of the recent economic boom, there are many labour challenges that remain constant. Lessons from Alberta’s economic rise, its recent slowdown and the renaissance of that western Canadian powerhouse may assist with proactive sustainable development plans for our province’s longterm growth strategy.
The residential construction industry in Saskatchewan faces unique labour market challenges that, for the most part, require that some of the foundations of human resource management be applied. Saskatchewan’s business climate consists of approximately 40,000 small businesses, with many involved in the residential construction industry. For example, the average size of a sub-contractor business consists of approximately four people; this represents an opportunity for strategic human resources planning, specific to skilled workforce planning and development.
There is no need to reinvent the wheel; many companies have developed strategies that can fulfil their growing labour needs; however, many others lack the capacity to do so.
