A Closer Look

US Veterans / Bank of America Hiring Vets for IT

Job recruiters at Bank of America Corp. plan to double the number of military veteran-related events they attend this year.  (Chosen excerpts by Job Market MonitorJosh Renick, the bank’s staffing manager for enterprise military recruiting, tells CIO Journal “it was technology executives who drove that initial push” to hire vets for IT positions.

Like at many organizations, the impulse to hire veterans is driven in large part by a sense of responsibility, and a desire to diversify the workforce. But Bank of America has also found that former military personnel help fill important skills gaps, particularly in positions related to information security and disaster recovery. “We know they bring valuable skills and experience to the company,” Mr. Renick said. And while he would not disclose specific numbers, he said, “the performance and retention data are positive.”

The bank began intentionally recruiting veterans in 2007, and put together a recruiting and support organization for returning veterans in 2007. At first, BoA recruited through magazines popular with veterans, but has since expanded its outreach to job boards dedicated to veterans, sections of job sites dedicated to veterans, as well as officers of military programs dedicated to helping veterans transition back to civilian life. Mr. Resnick said BoA has executives responsible for developing relationships with officers of those programs at military bases around the country.
