Health Minister Jack Snelling has told a parliamentary committee that 600 full time equivalent jobs would be axed over the next four years.
He would not rule out the loss of nurses, who make up 40 per cent of the SA Health workforce.
Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation state secretary Elizabeth Dabars said Mr Snelling’s admissions would reduce health service availability and quality, require staff to do more with less and lead to fewer graduate opportunities.
“By leaving open the possibility of cuts to nurses and midwives, this Government is clearly contemplating cuts to both the availability and quality of services,” she said.
“Our health system is currently under considerable pressure.
“Cuts to nurses and midwives will mean less health services and a lower quality of care.”
She said it would also reduce opportunities for graduates who were needed now, to be trained to care for South Australians into the future.
