ONLY 47 per cent of births are attended to by a skilled health worker at health institutions, says community development, mother and child health minister Dr Joseph Katema.
During the launch of the Safe Motherhood Action Groups (SMAGS) Radio Distance Learning (RDL) programme in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Katema said home delivery was as high as 53 per cent because communities in rural areas had limited access to health care.
He said when a mother dies; children lose their prime caregiver, and her family loses her love.
And USAID Zambia Health Team leader Sangita Patel said the RDL programme would allow information to reach many people in the community, adding that it would reinforce key messages.
