San Antonio and Toyota / A Local Employment policy

“We learned a lot with Toyota,” he said. “The wonderful thing about having such a world-class company come and choose to bring high-paying manufacturing jobs is that it amplified the value of the state to have a cohesive outreach plan on the state and local level.”

A decade later, officials again have teamed up, this time for a project with the potential to eclipse Toyota’s effect here.

San Antonio is one of several finalists for an aerospace project that could generate at least 3,000 jobs — including many engineering positions — paying on average at least $80,000. And the state again has partnered with City Hall and Bexar County to recruit the company to the city — a tactic some see as the legacy of the Toyota deal.

Details of the aerospace project, including the identity of the manufacturer, remain a closely guarded secret.

The Toyota project was known as Starbright. For the aerospace manufacturing, officials use the code name Bullet.

“We realized that (Toyota) project was bigger than anything we could do locally,” Wolff said, “and it quickly became clear the state would have to pay a very key role. Everyone realized it was an opportunity for a breakthrough.”
