Puerto Rico’s new governor strode onstage wielding a baseball bat on Wednesday as he unveiled a long-awaited plan to help create thousands of jobs on an island struggling to emerge from a financial crisis.
Alejandro Garcia Padilla signed a new law called “Jobs Now” in front of hundreds of business owners and dozens of government officials attending a local economic summit. He was joined onstage by former Major League Baseball player Edgar Martinez, who handed out autographed bats to business owners who had already pledged to hire a specific number of workers by 2014.
Garcia said the U.S. territory has the talent and resources needed to hit a home run and stimulate the economy. He has promised to create 50,000 jobs in the next 18 months.
“I understand that people are skeptical,” he said. “The government has failed the people many times before.”
Puerto Rico’s unemployment rate currently hovers above 13 per cent, higher than in any U.S. state.
