The current world-wide recession has focused the spotlight, once again, on the need to redouble our efforts to find new and creative ways of boosting employment in Sierra Leone, one of the countries hardest hit by the economic downturn. Party manifestoes have been published ahead of the presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday November 17. In its manifesto, the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) seeks another mandate to continue its 2007 “Agenda for Change,” while its main political rival, the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), wants to chart a “New Direction” for the country in the next five years. Both parties promise to create jobs and do other things to overcome the perception that government does not care about the needs of the ordinary people. The road ahead is filled with many opportunities and challenges for the winner of Saturday’s elections…
