Doctors who fall below standard could lose their licence to practise in ‘the biggest change to medical regulation in 150 years’.
They will be assessed every year to see if they are fit to stay on the medical register, under a scheme set to start in December.
The General Medical Council said it would be a ‘comprehensive system of regular checks for all doctors’ – who can go their entire career without any formal competency assessment.
‘We want to have the best survival rates in Europe for the major killer diseases,’ said health secretary Jeremy Hunt, as he announced the reforms.
‘Doctors save lives every day and making sure they are up to speed with the latest treatments and technologies will help them save even more. This is why a proper system of revalidation is so important.’..
