US – Hospitals laid off more employees in May

Hospitals laid off more employees in May than in prior months, but mass layoffs in the ambulatory care setting declined slightly, according to a monthly report issued June 20 by the U.S. Dept. of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Eleven mass layoffs affecting at least 765 people occurred in the hospital setting in May. Only five such incidents occurred in this sector of the health care industry in April, leading 369 people to claim unemployment benefits. Nine happened in March, with at least 900 jobs cut…
