TransHub Ontario aims to add 5,000 jobs by 2015

A regional transportation advocacy group should target large manufacturers, trucking companies and warehouses in the GTA to sell them on moving west to get out of gridlock.

That’s one of the recommendations of a new report laying out the action plan for the next three years of TransHub Ontario. The year-old group aims to capitalize on the transportation assets of Hamilton, Niagara and Burlington to create a gateway leading in and out of the United States.

Its goals include attracting a minimum of 5,000 new supply chain sector jobs and 13 new or materially expanded businesses over the next three years. It also aims to increase goods movement through the area by 25 per cent.

The plan, developed by Hamilton’s Focus Business Consulting, was presented to TransHub members at a meeting Wednesday. The group’s board of directors will deliberate the proposals and set out priorities and timelines, says CEO John Dolbec.

“One of our key economic advantages is that we’re not the GTA. We can access the busiest border crossings without being mired in gridlock. There are a lot of distribution and logistics centres in Peel and Brampton that are essentially landlocked.”…
