April 17 is national Equal Pay Day, when women and men around the country recognize the wage gap between working women and men and offer remedies to address pay inequity. According to the 2010 Census, women are paid on average 77 cents for every dollar their male counterparts are paid for the same work.
But here in Indiana, women’s pay doesn’t even measure up to the national average. In fact, our wage gap is one of the largest in the nation. Hoosier women are only paid 73 cents to the dollar. The gap is even higher for women of color. Over a 40-year career, Hoosier women are shortchanged $511,000 in career earnings…
