South Africa’s unemployment rate hovers around 25 per cent, and the impact of the global financial crisis of 2008 and 2009 led the country to lose around 1.2m jobs. In the 25-34 age group 50 per cent of South Africans do not work, and it is thought that 50 per cent of young black South Africans will never have the chance to do so.
The Development Bank of Southern Africa’s 2011 South Africa Development Report warned that the national economy would need to grow at 9 to 10 per cent in the intervening years in order to reach the target of 5m new jobs by 2020…
