In Sacramento, a number of veterans groups and state and local employment agencies work to make local employers aware of job-ready veterans.

• Employment Development Department (www.edd.ca.gov).
• California Department of Veterans Affairs (www.cdva.ca.gov).
• Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (seta.net).
“We work very hard to send job-ready people to work,” said George Hunter, an EDD employment program representative. EDD representatives tell companies of tax credits and other incentives available for hiring vets and attend career events like the “Honor a Hero – Hire a Vet” job fairs across the state.
But the SHRM survey shows that connecting employers and veterans searching for work in the civilian world remains a struggle, said Nancy Hammer, who leads SHRM’s military-hiring initiative.
“The perception of having veterans on staff is high for their experience and their teamwork, but the number (of employers) who are proactively seeking them has not changed,” Hammer said.
