The Long Beach school board has approved the layoffs of more than 300 employees, including the entire teaching staff of the Head Start preschool program, as part of proposed budget cuts.

The Press-Telegram ( http://bit.ly/ypTARZ) says the school district is proposing the cuts in anticipation of a more than $189 million budget deficit by 2014.
