Jobs in information technology and engineering in Toronto are in high demand but too few recent graduates are available to fill them, a year-long study shows.
For every seven jobs in information technology and engineering there is only one qualified candidate to fill them, a study by the Toronto Region Research Alliance found.
These trends are unlikely to change in the near future as most high school students are more interested in studying business and health sciences than information technology or engineering, the study also found.
Still viewed by many students as a “geek” profession, information technology as a career remains a mystery to parents, educators and media, a conference of Toronto-area employers heard Tuesday.
“It wasn’t really discussed even in career class (in high school). Most people were talking about becoming doctors,” Poki Chau, a math and business student at Wilfrid Laurier University, told the gathering at the Toronto Board of Trade.
