While it may not be the best of times or the worst of times for Alliant Techsystems, the company faces a mixed bag of good news and bad news.
Company employees were recently asked to volunteer for layoffs before mandatory layoffs might be ordered in late March. At the same time, the company won a major military contract.
The need for the staff reductions at the Rocket Center facility is largely because of the end of several defense programs and federal spending reductions, said Rod Gibbons, director of communications for ATK Missile Products, which is an umbrella group for the company including the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in Rocket Center. No specific numbers have been set for the layoffs, Gibbons said. About 1,350 ATK employees work at the ballistics lab.
“There have been no layoffs … but it is likely there will be some layoffs,” Gibbons said. An email sent to employees asked them to consider a voluntary layoff before decisions had to be made about terminations. The idea behind the request was to limit the impact of discharges. The layoffs would be considered permanent.
