Graduates in Canada – A ‘lost generation’ really ?

Statistics Canada released the first data from the new National Graduates’ Survey. To put it mildly, this new data blows both of those narratives out of the water. The NGS is designed to report on the fate of graduates two years after graduation. What was released last week was the 2012 employment and income situation … Continue reading

Canadians who study medicine, even at the best medical schools in the world, face barriers and prejudice when they seek to return home to work in B.C. and rejoin their families.   The government has allowed universities, instead of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, to choose who is granted entry-level training jobs as resident … Continue reading

Job Search for Canadian Law Students – New job site launched

The Law Job Exchange, launched just three weeks ago, promises to “link you up with opportunities that you may have otherwise missed.”  “The web site is all about sharing opportunities and I don’t think that’s something law students are necessarily used to with the competitiveness of the profession,” says web site founder Nikolitsa Katsoulias. “But … Continue reading

Canada – Lies, damn lies and jobs numbers

That data shows that the government’s claims about strong job growth, like Flaherty’s above, are more than a little misleading. A slightly better measure is the unemployment rate. Of the seven years after the Conservatives took office, Canada’s unemployment rate was higher than the OECD average for four years and lower for three. The latest … Continue reading

Job Market in Canada – Stephen Harper’s theory doesn’t fit the facts

Reality, as Prime Minister Stephen Harper is discovering, can poke holes in the most elegant of theories. In this case, the theory is the Conservative view of how Canada’s economy works, a view that goes something like this: Yes, the country suffered an economic recession but that’s over. Yes, there is still high unemployment — … Continue reading

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) argues that while Statistics Canada’s approach may be accurate it is not detailed enough to convey the true landscape of the labour market. “The economy has not created enough jobs, and those that have been created are disproportionately precarious … more Canadians are unemployed, marginally attached, or simply not engaging … Continue reading
