Canada – Revisions show bigger job losses in December

Statistics Canada on Wednesday revised its December employment data to show a bigger loss of 11,300 jobs from a previously reported decline of 4,300, with a gain in full-time positions cut to 35,000 from 53,500. 

Part-time job losses improved to 46,300 from a loss of 57,700 that was previously reported Jan. 9. The national unemployment rate for the month was revised to 6.7 percent from 6.6 percent.

The revisions, going back to 2001, were based in part on new census data from the 2011 national survey. Previous numbers were calculated using the 2006 census data and undergo an annual revision to account for new weightings of seasonal factors.

Employment gains for the year were 121,000, with the bulk of the growth in September and October.
