The starting salaries for graduate jobs has declined as the economic downturn bites.
The average starting salary for graduates in professional employment dropped by 11%, from £24,293 to £21,701 in real terms between 2007 and 2012.
Only two subject areas – Materials Technology, and Librarianship & Information Management – showed an increase in starting salaries, of 13% and 3% respectively.
Starting salaries for General Engineering graduates fell by 2%; salaries for graduates of Middle Eastern and African Studies fell by 25%. Even Medicine and Dentistry (always high graduate starting salary rankings) showed reductions of 15% and 9% respectively.
Remember, though, that some caution is necessary when looking at these stats where the numbers of graduates in any particular subject area is likely to be small.
