Women are suffering from public-sector job cuts and shifting into lower-paying fields such as retail and leisure and hospitality, as their job gains fail to keep up with men in the recovery.
The economy added 113,000 jobs last month, according to the Labor Department’s monthly survey of employers. That resulted from a net gain of 164,000 jobs for men and a net loss of 51,000 jobs for women.
Public-sector cuts drove the decline in women’s jobs. Government jobs held by women fell by 30,000 last month. That likely reflects teachers, nurses, clerks and other positions being cut by local, state and federal governments.
