Thousands of employees of Japanese tech company Sony will be affected by a major reorganization plan of the company. They have confirmed they are selling their Vaio PC business and switching its TV division into its own company, a move which is expected to lay off 5,000 employees from its global operations.
It is estimated that around 1,500 employees will be laid off in Japan while the remaining 3,500 will come from businesses offshore. Employees in the manufacturing and sales and administration roles in its TV and PC businesses would be offered redundancy and early retirement packages. Others would be offered a transfer to other lines of businesses in the Japanese firm’s efforts to cut one-third of its costs for the next 15 months before the start of 2015 fiscal year.
