Walmart Canada is still in growth mode, with plans to spend about $500-million this year to upgrade its network and add new stores.
The country’s biggest mass merchant said Tuesday it will work on 35 supercentre projects between now and next January, bringing its Canadian store count to 395 from 389. That will include 282 grocery-inclusive supercentres, and 113 discount stores.
The company’s retail footprint will grow to about 15-million square feet from 14-million, a net square footage increase of roughly 7%…
The projects announced Tuesday include investments of more than $376-million on store projects, $91-million to enhance its fresh food distribution network, and $31-million on e-commerce. They are expected to generate more than 7,500 jobs, Walmart said.
