Wrexham MP Ian Lucas said the loss of an expected 615 jobs at the Sharp factory on the Llay Industrial Estate announced today is a hammer blow to the town.
“May I say how sorry I am for those who are losing their jobs in the run up to Christmas and I will work with the Council and all local agencies to support them at this difficult time,” said the MP.
Sharp intend to stop production of solar panels in February.
Sharp said in a statement, “The planned closure by the end of February 2014 will result in redundancies for up to 250 Sharp employees, and non-renewal of related agency worker contracts. The decision comes as part of structural reforms in line with the Corporation’s Medium-Term Management Plan announced in May 2013, which have been accelerated by the rapid commoditization of the UK and European solar panel markets.
