Malaysia / Construction industry faces severe shortage of workers

Construction companies say the industry is facing a severe shortage of skilled and unskilled workers as government authorities weed out illegal immigrants from the country.

They are concerned that if this situation is left unchecked, it could affect the performance of projects in terms of completion and productivity particularly those under the 10th Malaysia Plan and the Economic Transformation Programme.

In addition, long application process for visa and permits were also hampering the industry which suffered from manpower loss, time and money.

“We are facing a severe shortage of manpower as too many construction companies were competing for a limited supply of talent.

“Bear in mind that the implementation of the Mass Rapid Transit project requires numerous skilled workers, both local and foreign, considering the complexity and fast-track nature of the project,” said Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) President Matthew Tee in an interview with Bernama Thursday.
