Appointed administrators said cuts “necessary if parts of Blackbuster are to be saved and a buyer found”
Appointed administrators to Blockbuster have announced plans to close 72 of its 264 outlets with the loss of 452 jobs.
Blockbuster entered administration in October for the second time this year after current owners Gordon Brothers Europe to turn the company around.
No details have been released as yet on which UK stores are to close.
Joint administrators Simon Thomas and Nick O’Reilly of Moorfields Corporate Recovery, said the latest store closures were “necessary if parts of Blackbuster are to be saved and a buyer found”.
The administrators added: “This has not been an easy decision to make and we acknowledge that, with Christmas on the horizon, this will be extremely upsetting news to a large number of people most of all those affected by the store closures.”
Blockbuster, which specialises in DVD and game rental, had a chain of 528 UK stores employing 4,190 staff in January, which had shrunk to 264 stores and around 2,000 staff prior to its latest administration.
