Gannett / At least 200 Layoffs

Gannett has reportedly laid off over 200 staffers in the company’s biggest round of cuts in years.

Jim Hopkins of Gannett Blog, an independent blog about the company, said Friday that readers have estimated that Gannett has eliminated 223 jobs in at least 37 locations. More layoffs, Hopkins said, are expected to come on Monday.

Affected newspapers reportedly include major titles like the Indianapolis Star, the Des Moines Register and the Arizona Republic. The Republic lost an estimated 29 jobs, according to Hopkins, the Star an estimated 19 and the Register an estimated nine. Gannett titles in Wisconsin were also hard hit, and lost a total of 31 jobs.

The company gave few details about the decision. When asked about the layoffs, a company spokesperson told Jim Romenesko, “Some USCP [U.S. Community Publishing] sites are making cuts to align their business plans with local market conditions.”
