Almost half of all UK job vacancies were in London and southeast England last month, raising fears that any jobs growth on the back of the recovering economy could widen the Regionregional divide.
Nine out of the 10 easiest areas to find a job were in southern England, including Cambridge, Guildford, Winchester and Reading.
Hopes of a gradual improvement in the labour market have been raised by last week’s data showing a 0.6 per cent increase in gross domestic product in the second quarter.
However, unbalanced employment growth would undermine George Osborne’s aim of building an economy that “supports every part of our country”. The chancellor said private sector jobs were especially needed in regions that had been too dependent on the public sector.
