Canada / Federal Government Cut 15,000 Jobs Last Year

There are signs that the Canadian government’s austerity plan is advancing at a rapid pace.

Canada’s chief bureaucrat– the Clerk of the Privy Council—says the federal public-sector payroll shrank by 5.5% or more than 15,000 positions over nine months last year.

That’s three-quarters of the way towards the government’s planned 19,200 job cuts over a three-year period, a target outlined in last year’s federal budget.

In a report presented to Canadian lawmakers last week, the country’s top civil servant, Wayne Wouters, said the number of employees working in the federal public sector, as of Dec. 31, 2012, stood at 262,902 employees — down from the 278,092 workers employed on March 31, 2012, or the end of the government’s fiscal year. The number of executive positions fell by 3.5%, or 241 managers. There were 6,682 executives in the federal bureaucracy at the end of 2012.

“Through diligent human resources planning and effective implementation, we have managed the system-wide changes sensitively and responsibly,” Mr. Wouters said in his report. “We have treated employees touched by these decisions with respect and provided them with the support they needed.”

The report didn’t provide details on the job reductions. The 2012 budget anticipated that 12,000 employees would be laid off, while more 7,000 positions would be eliminated through attrition.

Thanks for sharing this nice post. Lots of people are looking for Federal Government Jobs because it gives real wages, and a competitive benefits and job stability like to make it an attractive place to work, where private companies are downsizing and laying off employees left and right.
