Supermarket giant Asda has revealed plans to make a £700m investment into its operations in a move expected to create 2,500 jobs.
The investments include a new same-day delivery service for food orders, plus an injection of capital into its stores and supply chain.
It comes as the Leeds-headquartered retailer, which is Yorkshire’s biggest company, reported a 4.5 per cent uplift in total sales, including petrol, to £22.8bn in the year to 31 December 2012 – up from £21.8bn a year earlier.
Chief executive Andy Clarke said: “I’m proud that in the continuing and very challenging trading environment we were able to increase total sales by 4.5 per cent last year. This shows that we are continuing to get it right for customers.
“By focusing on their needs through accelerating our investment in the technology and infrastructure to make shopping more convenient, customers can shop for what they want, when they want it.”
