Almost a decade after an internal survey conducted by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) showed that it would require at least 24,000 policemen in its jurisdiction, the nationwide recruitment for 18,000 will begin in June. At present, the force has around 65,000 personnel.
However, a senior railway official pointed out that the whole exercise is pointless as the survey was conducted 10 years ago. Since then the number of trains and passengers have increased manifold along with security concerns, the official said.
Giving example of the Central Railway’s Mumbai division, the official said the division, with around 78 stations, is manned by 1,800 RPF personnel. “Even if the 720 vacant posts were filled, it would still be half of what we need,” the official added. With the need to guard long distance trains and ladies coaches of local trains, the ideal figure of RPF personnel in the Mumbai division would be around 5,000.
Official sources say the recruitment process will consist of a written test before the physical tests.
“Recruitments are a long process. After the exams, verification of successful candidates can take almost six months. Training for the newly-recruited personnel takes around a year. It will take a good two years before these recruits can be put on duty,” the official said.
