Wisconsin / Skills gap / Boosting job training funds ?

If Wisconsin wants to make a dent in the skills gap, the state will have to make some serious investments in job training, advocates discussed at a luncheon in Brookfield Thursday.

Wisconsin is perhaps the only state that doesn’t put any “meaningful dollars” into job training, and the roughly $370 million in federal job training funds it receives are not highly effective nor efficiently spent, said Tim Sullivan, former Bucyrus International Inc. chief executive officer and current unpaid consultant for business and work force development for the state.

Wisconsin currently invests less than $15 million in discretionary job training funds, according to a recent report by Competitive Wisconsin Inc.

“It’s not enough for the federal dollars to get it done,” Sullivan said. “The governor understands it. I hope the Legislature understands it.”…
