Ford – 2,000 Entry-Level New Employees

Ford Motor Co. (F) has hired more than 2,000 entry-level factory workers this year so far, lowering its overall manufacturing costs, a Ford manufacturing executive said.

The new hires represent the first wave of workers paid an entry-level wage that is about $10 per hour lower than the existing workers.

The so-called second-tier wage was first adopted in Ford’s 2007 contract with the United Auto Workers union. Ford hasn’t been able to hire significant numbers of new workers until this year. Ford is adding shifts to meet demand, running plants around the clock.

“Our costs have gone down this year because of capacity utilization and entry level wages,” said Jim Tetreault, vice president of North America Manufacturing at an event in Wayne, Mich., to celebrate the production of the plug-in hybrid C-Max Energi…
