Australia – Mining jobs up 65 per cent in five years

EMPLOYMENT in Australia’s mining industry has jumped in the past five years, new Census figures show.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said the sector accounted for 1.8 per cent of the nation’s employment in 2011, up from 1.2 per cent in the previous Census in 2006.

The number of people who reported being employed in the mining industry increased by 65.2 per cent, or 69,667 people, according to data released yesterday.

Census executive director Andrew Henderson said the nation’s top 20 mining employment hot spots were mainly in Western Australia and Queensland…
