Australia – 900 court, prison jobs to go Opposition Leader John Robertson says

Opposition Leader John Robertson says confidential NSW Treasury documents show an estimated 881 jobs will be cut from prisons and courts.

Opposition Leader John Robertson said confidential NSW Treasury documents showed an estimated 881 jobs would be cut from the sector over the next four years.

‘These job cuts will impact on security, they will reduce safety and they will diminish services in towns and suburbs across the state,’ he said in a statement.

Mr Robertson is visiting Grafton prison on Wednesday to join protesters who have been blockading the facility since Friday over plans to downsize it from a 250-bed jail to a transient court facility.

‘My fear is that Grafton jail is just the tip of the iceberg – with almost 900 jobs to be axed from local prisons and courts over the next four years, including 356 job cuts this year alone,’ Mr Robertson said.

‘Grafton jail is the lifeblood of the local community but under Barry O’Farrell, the jail will close and 108 direct jobs will be lost.’..
