Iowa View: Iowa must address widening shortage of skilled workers | The Des Moines Register | DesMoinesRegister.com

As one might imagine Mark Twain saying, “reports of the death of manufacturing in the United States today have been greatly exaggerated.”

To follow up on a Feb. 4 story by Lynn Hicks in the Register, I believe we can “Recapture the American Dream” by addressing the need for a skilled work force in Iowa.

To foster creation of opportunities, we need to consider a couple of things:

Embrace the National Career Readiness Certificate and the National Association of Manufacturers-Endorsed Skills Certification System.

Create a business-friendly environment in Iowa.

When the recession in the U.S. took hold a couple of years ago, you couldn’t pick up a paper without seeing an obituary on manufacturing.
