Ireland / 20,000 manufacturing jobs could be lost within seven years

THE Government is planning to deliver an extra 20,000 manufacturing jobs over the next three years – in a move away from the “madness” of the property boom.

Ministers have complained that too much money and staff went into building houses instead of “making things” that other countries want to buy.

The urgency to take action has been highlighted by a new report which warns that 20,000 manufacturing jobs could be lost within seven years in a “do-nothing” scenario.

Jobs Minister Richard Bruton said the manufacturing industry had been “neglected” for too long.

“For too long, we spent our time building property to sell to one another. We now need to make things we can sell to others,” he said.
